About Centro das Mulheres de Vitóra de Santa Antão

The Center was founded in 1988 with the objective of developing projects to prevent violence and combat discrimination and to address the lack of opportunities for rural women. The organization is also responsible for the creation of municipal councils across Pernambuco’s rural areas. Today, the Center offers advising and training services to local civil society groups to enable their participation in the spheres of social service and public policy. Through this project these women initiated a movement to change these conditions by achieving local government representation as entrepreneurs.

The production of cassava flour is one of rural Pernambuco’s principal economic activities. Cassava is brought in from various other northern states to the flour houses of Pernambuco. The houses operate under precarious working conditions, often committing grave human rights violations, particularly in terms of worker safety regulations, and without any kind of formal registration.
