About ActionAid

ActionAid is an international organisation, working with over 25 million people in more than 40 countries for a world free from poverty and injustice.

Their head office is in Johannesburg. They are the only large international development organisation with their head office based in Africa. They also have offices right across Asia, the Americas and Europe. They believe the people whose lives their work affects should decide how they're run.

ActionAid uses their resources, influence and experience to help people find their own solutions. They listen to what people really want and need and help communities take action together to hold their governments to account, giving local organisations the support they need.

Women's Rights

ActionAid defends the rights of women and girls to live free from gender-based violence, have dignity in the face of HIV and AIDS, control their sexuality, and enjoy economic empowerment.

Their three focus areas are:

  • Violence against women and girls in public and private spaces
  • Economic alternatives for women - including the recognition, redistribution, and reduction of women's unpaid care work, and supporting the development women-only cooperatives and collectives
  • Sexual and reproductive health and rights
